Overview

All Winchester residents in Grades 2 through 7 (regardless of what school they attend) are welcome to participate in Winchester Pop Warner football, subject to age and weight requirements. The participation of Middle School students is complimentary of the successful and popular programs offered to McCall Middle School students by Sachem Youth Football, by providing qualified students the chance to play at the Pop Warner level if they so desire. Participation of 7th graders is limited to those boys who qualify as Older/Lighters (under 110 pounds and 12 years old born before 7/31/05).

Weight requirements for football players range from a minimum of 50 lbs to a maximum of 130 lbs, depending on age. Click this link for theĀ 2017 Age Weight Matrix.

Practices for the 2017 season will begin on August 15th. There will be 4 practices/week until the season starts after Labor Day, at which point there will be 3 practices per week plus games on Sundays. In 2016, during the regular season (September and October), we practiced on Tuesday and Thursdays nights from 6-8, and on Saturday mornings from 8-9:30. We expect a similar schedule in 2017. Our home games are played at Knowlton Stadium/Manchester Field (behind McCall Middle School). Our practices are at Ginn Field. Away games are often at other Middlesex League venues, but can be at any other location of a participant in the Eastern Massachusetts Pop Warner organization.

The first week of practice is primarily conditioning. Players wear helmets, shorts, t-shirts, and cleats. After 10 hours of practice, the players wear all of their equipment and begin physical contact. During this period, the coaches will do everything they can to ensure players have fun, are well hydrated, and learn a lot about football. Players who have logged sufficient practice time will be permitted to participate in pre-season scrimmages against other towns. There will be approximately 3 scrimmages per team in late August/early September in lieu of practices. Scrimmages typically take place during the evening hours (6-8 pm) and for the most part are against non-Middlesex League opponents, as we are not permitted to scrimmage against any program on our regular season schedule.
